With the final hotfix pushed live, we jumped straight into what we love most: making new content! New story, new music, new art. We also spent some time discussing the previous release cycle and made some tweaks to how we work behind the scenes.
Kincaid 2025.1 Update 3
Aside from various bug fixes, the update also introduces some changes to the game:
Kaha fight rebalance:
The boss fight with Kaha got a tune-up! Or more like a tune-down! We removed an entire combat phase and moved it to a different encounter down the line. Timings were adjusted across the board, and we added a breather phase to help with pacing.
Visual Improvements: All cistern levels are now fully decorated. But more on that later in the post.

Fresh Off The Mating Press
Last week was a writing week for me! I worked on a new story for an optional encounter. I noticed a trend in our word count increasing, but to be honest, so far, players seemed to really enjoy the stories and the lore hints and character development and even foreshadowing we inject into them.
If you didn't know, before I started drawing, I wrote a bunch of stories (they're still up on SoFurry) and whenever there is new stuff to write, I really like to get immersed in the characters and bring them to life. Maybe it's too much for a short little sidestory, but I think these touches bring the world to life - and I have a lot of fun doing it.
Also in the writing department, I started to rework the old stories for the CGs. Since they're not Game Over material anymore, and we don't want to scrap them, we found new homes for them and to give them the correct context, the transitions need to be reworked. And some of the writing could also use some touch ups to bring it up to bar with our newer stuff! ^w^
Workflow Improvements
If you played the new build when it first came out, you will have noticed that the majority of the levels were not really decorated. Big parts of the levels felt unfinished. While at the time this was due to time constraints, it made us think about how we handle our level design process. We don't like putting out scrappy, unpolished stuff. But it does mess with our pacing. We want to release more builds and for that we need to adjust our expectations on the builds.
We don't want to waste time decorating levels that we might throw out or change down the line. That's why we came up with the concept of a confidence meter. How much do we like the room as it is? Is the geometry going to change? Is it going to be moved to a different place on the map? Or scrapped altogether?
The more unsure we are, the less time we want to spend on decorating it and making it look pretty. Greyboxing a level is quick and easy, but dressing it up can take quite a while. There are lots of layers of decoration and effects that need to be filled out and tweaked.
So yeah, in future builds that feature new areas, expect some bare and scrappy looking rooms! We will dress them up bit by bit in subsequent updates!
We came up with a similar treatment for cutscenes: Writing and scripting them and making them flow just right without bugs can be a very time consuming process. But we do want to put in more story and characters, so we will do a rough version of cutscenes first, with the most important dialogue and maybe some movements, to get the point across. But instead of fine tuning the movements, we might just work with fades and transitions and even narrative boxes to tell the story.
Refining and polishing the cutscenes, similarly to dressing up levels, is going to be pushed back, as our confidence in the scene, where it is going to be placed etc. rises up.
