Hi everyone!

A New Challenger Appears!

Last week I spent a lot of time working together with Reydam and bunny on the character design for Kincaid's rival, Renee.

Some of you have already met her in the Haven Preview build when she was still in a very rough state.

She's a snarky hyena with a big mouth and a taste for trouble. And she's going to play a minor role in the upcoming build!

There is also a series of collectible pin-ups with her in the works, one of which is going to be included in this build.

So we thought it's important to flesh her out a bit more!

I put together a Sketch Pack with the concept art and some bonus lewds that won't make it into the final game. ^w~ You can grab it here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/renee-character-115345208

Here are some of the first sketches of both high rez and pixel art.

Initially she was supposed to be a decked out special operative of the antagonistic force Kincaid is fighting against, but the sprite ended up looking too tanky.

We tried out a few other ideas and this is the design direction we landed on:

As you can see we're still unsure about the face markings. For the longest time we've designed her without any because in our heads she has always been a yeen. But we quickly realized that she didn't read as one if we didn't spell it out - which is bad!

So for now we're leaning towards adding them just to make it clear that she is a hyena, but we'd also like to hear your thoughts!

And to preempt the obvious question: You'll have to wait and see! uwu

Melee-Based Games Be Like: When In Doubt, Press Attack Button

Ancient artifacts left behind by the Gardeners (Art is still placeholder from bunny). It seems like they were used to easier move around difficult terrain. Not sure how practical that actually is, though...

But hey, that’s ancient alien tech for you: no one knows what they were thinking, and just because it’s beyond our understanding doesn’t mean they always had the brightest ideas!

Seriously though: We just thought it was a fun mechanic and we already have other Gardener tech planned for our worlds anyway, so let's just throw this one onto that pile as well. ^w~

Heavy Hitters

So far, every enemy gives Kincaid the same kind of slight knockback. Gets very boring to play and to design around!

So we added more ways in which Kincaid can get hurt and/or displaced.

Environment and Miscellaneous Stuff

Big one: Giant blocks moved by energy. They can either be a safe platform to stand on, or a perilous, pounding, pulverizing wolf waffle maker! >_<

Smaller ones: New Push Blocks! A mechanic you might remember from the old demos. We're revisiting them, introducing pushing, pulling and even heavy-attacking them. They also function like a large battery, powering up mechanisms in the temple.

Wooden cogwheel - Taken from the village, cleaned up and improved animation slightly, to be used as background art in the cisterns.

Some more backwall art for the cisterns - bigger version of the design by Fabian.

Ziplines - Wooden Pipes version to go with the cisterns theme

Until next time! Cookie & Bunny

Oh hey, it's the platforming section things from Eroico, neat. I'm here for it.

And I like the face markings. Definitely makes the difference for being a Hyena visually.

Goggles are a solid concept, and could be used in the character's intro as good education for an attack telegraph, e.g. a flash prior to some action, which would make for a good intro cutscene to demonstrate the attitude of the rival.

A rival is such an amazing idea
